Schools and academy trusts are being encouraged to purchase their energy through one of the Department for Education's (DfE) approved energy framework providers, following updated guidance within 2026 Academy Trust Handbook.
Paragraph 2.29 of the guidance states that “Trusts must use the DfE Energy for Schools service or a DfE approved Energy deal as shown under Energy on get Help Buying for Schools unless an alternative with comparable pricing has been sourced. This will apply when your energy contracts are renewed”.
The updated guidance reinforces the importance of compliant procurement and directs trusts towards the DfE's reviewed and approved energy frameworks when purchasing electricity and gas.
A Simpler Route to Compliant Energy Procurement
Buying energy can be complex, particularly in a volatile market. Choosing a DfE-approved framework gives schools confidence that they are using a procurement route that has already been assessed by the Department for Education.
West Mercia Energy (WME) is proud to be one of the DfE's approved energy framework providers, helping over 3,000 schools, academies and public sector organisations procure their energy compliantly and effectively.
More Than Energy Procurement
Unlike a simple “procurement only” model, WME provide a fully managed service designed specifically for the education sector.
This provision is designed to ensure multi-site energy contracts run smoothly creating efficiencies across Estates, Operations, and Finance teams by reducing administrative burden and improving data visibility, reporting, budgeting and consumption control.
This allows school and trust leaders to spend less time managing energy contracts and more time focusing on their core priorities.
Supporting Schools to Procure with Confidence
As procurement legislation continues to evolve, choosing an approved framework provides assurance that your energy procurement is supported by a compliant route to market and specialist public sector expertise.
Whether your current contract is coming to an end or you're reviewing your procurement strategy, WME can help you understand your options and identify the most appropriate solution for your school or trust.
