Introducing the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

WME customers can now benefit from favourable SEG rates as part of our new partnership with npower Business Soluitons

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for West Mercia Energy (WME) customers as part of our partnership with npower Business Solutions (nBS). As a benefit of our new electricity framework which launched in April, WME’s public sector customers can now access a favourable Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) rate offered by npower’s sister company, E.ON Next. This initiative is designed to empower our customers to benefit from renewable energy generation while contributing to a more sustainable future.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government scheme introduced to support small-scale renewable energy generators, such as solar panel owners, by providing them with a financial incentive for exporting excess electricity back to the grid. Under the SEG, energy suppliers are required to offer payments to eligible generators for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity they export.

How does the SEG work?

  1. Installation of Renewable Energy Generation: To participate in the SEG, customers must first install renewable energy generation technologies, such as solar panels or wind turbines, on their premises. These technologies allow customers to generate their own electricity, reducing their reliance on traditional energy sources.
  2. Exporting Excess Electricity: When renewable energy generation exceeds the customer's electricity consumption, the surplus electricity is exported back to the grid. Smart meters or export meters measure the amount of electricity exported, ensuring accurate payments under the SEG.
  3. SEG Payments: Energy suppliers, including E.ON Next, offer payments to eligible generators for each kWh of electricity exported to the grid. The rate at which customers are paid varies depending on the supplier and the terms of the SEG tariff.

How can WME customers access the preferential SEG rate through WME?

As part of our commitment to providing value-added services to our customers, as part of our new Flexible Electricity Framework, WME customers are able to access a favourable SEG rate via E.ON Next. WME customers interested in accessing the preferential SEG rate can apply directly through WME.

Applying for the SEG through WME is simple and straightforward. Customers can reach out to our dedicated customer service team who will provide an electronic application form for completion. Upon completion, the forms are returned to WME, who will submit the application and monitor its progress. Once approved, customers’ will start benefiting from SEG payments for the excess electricity they export to the grid.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) presents an exciting opportunity for WME customers to generate renewable energy and earn financial rewards for their contributions to the grid. This offering further demonstrates our commitment to supporting sustainable energy solutions across the public sector.

Gavin Owen, Head of Business Development at WME commented, “We are delighted WME customers can now benefit from Eon’s excellent SEG rate as a benefit of our new framework with nBS. Self-generation is key to decarbonising the public sector and ensuring our customers can maximise revenue for any generation they don’t use is a great benefit of our new electricity framework”.
