“At West Mercia Energy, we are committed to driving social value through every aspect of our operations for the benefit of our staff and our customers. We aim to positively impact our communities, environment, and economy by integrating social value into our business operations, key supplier contracts, and customer relationships”.
In fact, that is our “Vision Statement”.
Last year we published our brand-new Social Value Strategy, designed to deliver this vision.
At the heart of our strategy is our four key objectives:
- Enhancing Community Wellbeing
- Promoting Environmental Sustainability
- Fostering Economic Growth
- Inspiring a Sustainable Generation
A key part of our strategy is measuring and reporting our impact. Our latest report outlines our progress over the last 6 months.
77 Streamlined Energy Carbon Report Produced
25 Power to Drive workshops allocated, benefitting 662 students
81 hours of community volunteering
£49,403 allocated to support environmental projects within schools benefitting 17,000 people in communities WME work
We also published our Carbon Reduction Plan reaffirming our commitment to net-zero emissions by 2030
Enhancing Community Wellbeing
In collaboration with npower Business Solutions and TotalEnergies, WME's Social Value Fund facilitated the funding of 49 environmental projects across school customers. Schools were invited to apply for grants of up to £1,000 to support projects on their premises. These projects are currently being delivered and all of the successful applications will help enhance community wellbeing, and help inspire a sustainable generation.
Promoting Environmental Sustainability
WME are leading by example and have reaffirmed our commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2030. We have published our Carbon Reduction Plan which was completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and all staff have had training on the report and how we can all contribute towards our 2030 target.
Fostering Economic Growth
Last year, WME staff members braved the wet weather to volunteer our time at Wyre Forest, managed by Forestry England. The event was a huge success and marked the beginning of what WME hopes will be a long-term relationship with Forestry England. Future volunteer days are already being discussed.
In addition, WME continues to be a supporter of the apprenticeship scheme, currently employing an apprentice within our finance team.
Inspiring a Sustainable Generation
In partnership with npower Business Solutions, WME are providing 25 free, Power to Drive workshops for students in KS2/3. The STEM based workshops are currently being rolled out, with really positive feedback to date.
Along with our Social Value fund, we hope these initiatives and schemes really help inspire young people to take an active interest in sustainability.
